Parliament suspends consideration of Public University Bill
Parliament has today suspend the consideration stage of public university bill, 2020 until stake holders present its inputs for deliberations.
The bill was laid in parliament by education minister. Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh On Tuesdays,3rd November,2020
Members of the academia including UTAG, GRASAG, Vice Chancellors among others have kicked against the bill arguing it threatens academic freedom and autonomy of public universities.
Speaking in an interview with the parliamentary press corps today, the chairman on education committee Hon. William Agyapong Quaittoo said, the purpose of the bill is to provide establishment, governance arrangements and management of public university in the country.
The objective of the bill will ensure government frame works to appoints 15 governing council, memberships of the council, chancellor and council chairperson. He added.
According to him, the bill remains suspended until all stakeholders agree with the content.
“The consideration at the plenary has been put on hold until we receive their (UTAG) inputs on the new Bill”.
