The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has formally outdoor the Universal Quick Response (QR) Code and Proxy Pay system.

The QR Code and Proxy Pay platform are part of plans to enhance digital payments as the government pursues a cash-lite agenda.

I used my universal QR code pin to purchase Waakye this morning from Auntie Muni at Ridge in Accra.

“The Universal QR code being used in Ghana is first of its kind in Africa and also one of the best interoperable payment acceptance solutions in the world.

This will help us move further into the cashless direction of the digitisation drive because there will be no need for merchants to have point of sales devices, with the QR code platform, all they need is a mobile phone and even a “yam phone” will work. he wrote

The Vice President outdooring the Universal Quick Response (QR) Code and Proxy Pay system in Accra today, Thursday, November 19, 2020 said the QR Code makes it possible for all merchants, service providers, and institutions to receive payments from bank accounts, e-zwich accounts, mobile money wallets, or internationally issued visas or MasterCards instantly.

Speaking with the media, he entreated everyone to subscribe to the digital payment system as it is accessible to all.

“I expect big things for Ghana, going forward, and we are riding on the rails of the Mobile Money Interoperability. Everybody should look to using the QR code, download whatever application. What is important is that, even if you don’t have a smartphone, you can use the system. It works both for smartphones and the ‘yam’ phones to make payments.”

He was accompanied by the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, representatives from the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems Limited (GhIPSS), Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), and the Fidelity Bank.
