WE WILL KILL WILDLIFE ELEPHANTS DESTROYING OUR COCOA AND OTHER CROPS-FARMERS AT ASSIN MMPENTEM-MMUA THREATENS

Angry farmers in Assin Mpentem-mmua and its surrounding communities in the Assin South District of the Central Region have threatens to kill wildlife elephants who have evaded their cocoa and other crop farms.

The farms say their dreams of having a bumper harvest has been dashed following the invasion of the elephants on their farms.

They told Angel FM’s correspondent Sadrack Kwame Owusu Asante that, the rampaging elephants occasionally visit the area, particularly every August-October to cause mayhem on their farms and destroys cash and food crops including cocoa farms, plantain, yam, cocoyam, cassava among others.

They have therefore decided to kill the elephant any time they see them on their farms after several attempts to get the Game and Wildlife Service to keep the elephants away from their farms.

Responding to the grievances of the farmers, the Assistant Wildlife Officer of the Kakum National Park, Daniel Konzin said though they have received the reports from the area but it is the responsibility of the farmer to protect their farms from being raid by the elephant.

He however noted, management of the wildlife conservation have sensitized and educate the farmers on how to prevent the elephants from raiding their farms but it incurs some cost which the farmers don’t want to bear.
