Korle Bu Eye Centre Conducts 6 Cornea Transplants

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Eye Centre performed six successful cornea transplants last Tuesday.

The procedure was carried out in partnership with Dr Geoffery Tabin, a professor of Ophthalmology and Global Medicine at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford in the United States of America (USA).

Tissues used for the transplant were received freely from donors in the USA, as were the surgical procedures.

Out of the about 30 people on standby for the transplant, the centre could perform the procedure on only six because there were not enough donors.

A cornea transplant (keratoplasty) is a surgical procedure to replace part of the cornea with corneal tissue from a donor.

The procedure at the Korle Bu Eye Centre was also used to transfer knowledge and skills to Ghanaian doctors, who should be able to perform the surgery when a donor regime and tissue bank becomes available in the country.

The Daily Graphic, which was one of the few selected media houses invited to witness the procedure, observed that a combination of instruments, such as the laser ablation, eye spud and forceps, was used to remove the defective cornea before replacing it with the donor cornea.

Speaking to the media after the last procedure, which took about 20 minutes, Dr Tabin said: “I am very happy that the six we did have been successful, except for one that had some complications, but we handled it.”

He said the patients were in good shape and everything should be back to normal with them in a couple of days.

“It took us about a full day to work on them and each procedure was between 20 and 45 minutes,” he said.

“Cornea issues can lead to blindness and we have a lot of them around. The youngest we worked on was 16 years. Everything was free, from the donors to operating on them,” he added.

Quality

Dr Tabin said he was impressed by the quality of doctors Ghana had, adding that “the enthusiasm doctors here show when it comes to the acquisition of knowledge in the eye field is commendable”.

We will abolish E-levy when we assume power if NPP passes it- Asiedu Nketia

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will abolish the Electronic Transfers E-levy if the NPP passes it, and they win power in 2025.

Addressing the media at Obra Spot at the Nkrumah Circle ahead of the Coalition of Concerned Ghanaians (CCG) demo, the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia described the E-levy as daylight robbery.

According to him “the fire will keep burning so long as we have a government that operates with impunity.”

“We will abolish it within the first 100 days we assume power. It is not taxation. It is daylight robbery. Taking people’s capital from their pockets.

“We are not against taxation. Taxation is for value addition. But we will not sit and watch the government to keep robbing us. The E-levy is not taxation, it is daylight robbery. The alternatives are there. Who in his right senses in this country asked the Minister for Roads to argue that we abolish the road tolls and convert the toll booths to toilets and washrooms?” he added.

The General Secretary further stated the E-levy is aimed at robbing the ordinary Ghanaian of their hard-earned capital.

The demonstration by the Coalition of Concerned Ghanaians (CCG) is currently underway in Accra.

The group says they are protesting poor economic policies by the Akufo-Addo administration.

“All and sundry feeling the pinch and bearing the brunt of insensitive Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration as well those who will feel the severe impact of the E-levy, if passed to join other well-meaning Ghanaians at the Obra Spot at 7:00am on Thursday, February 10, 2022 for the Yentua demonstration.

“The is a clarion call and a civic duty to fight for our survival and that of generations yet unborn. This is our country and the onus is on us, as citizens to make it a better place,” the Coalition noted in a statement.

Love and Detergent: Boy 17 drinks poison over fear of arrest after ‘camping’ girl 15 in his room

I’m called to attend to an emergency. They say a teenage boy has attempted suicide. The size of the crowd gathered at the ward is telling — that this is not only a medical emergency but something of a community concern!

The reports are sporadic. Everyone has their own account. Folks say Yaw ingested poison. Others say he didn’t. Everyone speculates all sorts of stories.

The 17-year-old teenage boy is lying motionless, and unresponsive. We have little history, but we initiate resuscitation.

Half an hour later, his mother is brought in, visibly shaken. She’s having the true story: the facts!

She had noticed that her son was cohabiting with a 15-year-old girl who hails from the neighboring community. Yaw, who has a room to himself, had hosted her for the past 4 days, in spite of repeated warnings from his mother.

This morning, his mother heard of a missing-person-report filed by the girl’s parents through the community information center. She then stood her ground and drove the girl out.

The girl upon reaching home met the wrath of her parents. They got her to lead them back to her hideout, swearing to tear apart the lover boy and his poor single mother.

As events escalated, foreseeing imminent troubles, Yaw locked himself up and gulped copious amounts of detergent.
