Even Jesus Christ remained silent at a point; You can’t force Jean Mensah to testify- Lawyer Maurice Ampaw Tells Petitioner

Private legal Practitioner Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has said under no circumstance can the petitioner of the ongoing election Petition coerce  the first respondent to testify before the court.

He said the first respondent, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa can only testify at her own will without being forced by the petitioner.

He argued that Mr. Asiedu Nketia during his cross examination refused to provide evidence to prove the 2nd respondent in the person of President Akufo-Addo did not win the 2020 Presidential election. It is on that bases that the EC has also refused to be cross examined. Saying it is a game played in court.

Lawyer Ampaw said to him the Lawyer of Petitioner, Tsatsu Tsikata want to use the EC and President Akufo-Addo to clean the mess caused by the witnesses of the petitioner.

Maurice Ampaw, however, sited a biblical example with how Jesus Christ refused to answer questions at the palace of the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate.

“This is not the first time a respondent can decide not to answer questions. You can remain silent even at the edge of death. Jesus Christ did the same. In front of Pontius Pilate when asked if he is the Messiah, he remained silent,” he said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ monitored by mynewsroomgh.com

Speaker Threatens To Publish Names Of MPs Who Have Tested Positive For Covid-19

The Rt Hon Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kinsford Bagbin, has sent a strong warning to Members of Parliament who have tested positive to COVID-19 to stay home and self-isolate otherwise he would be forced to publish their names in the media.

Parliament since last week began a COVID-19 screening exercise for all MPs and staff for possible cases in the wake of the increasing cases of the disease in the country.

According to a communication relayed on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 on behalf of the Speaker by the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, some MPs who have tested positive for the virus are still attending to business in Parliament even though they have received test results that confirm they are positive.

Mr Joseph Osei Owusu said,” he will be forced to publish the names of Members who have tested positive in order to warn the rest of us. Please, let’s take these protocols seriously and let all Members who have been informed of their test results that they have tested positive, withdrew from the precincts of Parliament. Not just the Chamber; Stay home and self-isolate; go through the protocols; and recover before they return to the House.”

The Hon Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, informed the House that some of MPs are not being cooperative and have still decided not to subject themselves to the COVID-19 screening exercise.

As at the time he was relaying the information on the Floor with just about 45 minutes for the screening exercise to end, he said about 52 Members of Parliament had still not submitted themselves for the test.

“Mr. Speaker, yesterday only three people submitted themselves. Today, only five people have submitted themselves. It means that, out of the 60 that had not submitted themselves, 52 have still not submitted. That is dangerous,” the Majority Leader said.

Mr Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu further added that, from next week onwards all Members of Parliament who have not submitted themselves to screening exercise would not be allowed into the chamber.

The Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Mohamed Mubarak Muntaka, expressed the concern that the Leadership of the House is handicapped in determining exactly which of the MPs have tested positive or not because of the mode of transmission of the test results directly to individual MPs.

However, the Minority Chief Whip is of the view that the current situation demands that the policy is reviewed for the names of these persons who have tested positive to be released to at least the Chief Whips of both sides for them to ensure that those infected people do not come anywhere near the precinct of Parliament to spread the virus among the MPs.

I Tested Positive For COVID19- Ghanaian Journalist Isreal Laryea Shares Experience

Ghanaian broadcast journalist, Israel Laryea has shared his experience after he tested positive for COVID-19.

He wrote: This was after a colleague named me as a contact. I immediately had to get my sample taken and tested. This was Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

I quarantined in the outhouse at home and only accessed the main building when it was necessary. When I did, I made sure I sanitized anything I touched, especially the door handles.

Being in the outhouse was kind of lonely – even though comfortable and had everything I needed. I missed my wife Louisa. We spent the nights chatting away on phone, as if we were just starting to date.

I had no symptoms except for an initial mild headache and fever.

I’ve always kept my mask on in public, especially in the office and have continued to do so.

Fortunately, I did not lose my sense of taste nor smell.

Do I know how I may have been infected? I have a few suspicions.

When I had to resume work physically to the office after working from home for a few months at the height of the pandemic, I didn’t take chances at all. I packed my meals and drink to the office from home and had my lunch in my car. No canteens, no restaurants and no eating together with colleagues. I wouldn’t let a “stranger” drive my car to even repark it, because I was scared of possible contamination.

I stopped going to the make-up room. I made-up myself before going on air. I sanitized my hands and space before I took off my mask in the studio. I stopped going to the barber. He rather came home. I ensured he washed his hands, disinfected and had his mask on.

Admittedly, after a significant decline in the number of cases though, I eased my strict preventive protocols somewhat and visited the office canteen. I ate in restaurants even though I tried to keep a good distance away from people. I allowed others to repark my car in the office and took off my mask to have a drink or a snack at my desk when I was alone.

So yeah, I dropped my guard in quite a few instances, making it difficult to determine at which point I got infected.

Fortunately, the rest of my household tested negative – that’s Louisa my wife and Mitch my middle son, who is the only child currently at home, schooling online, as the other two are in boarding school. I do not have any other contacts to name as I ensured to keep my mask on in the presence of others to prevent a spread.

Keeping your mask on shows you’re being responsible. Stay away from crowds, wash your hands frequently and use the alcohol-based hand sanitizer when there are no wash facilities.

Thank God for His grace.

May His grace be upon you too should you become exposed. But perhaps if you strictly adhere to the protocols, that grace will be sufficient for you.
