First Lady Rejects Allowances, Set To Refund GHC 899, 000

The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, says she can’t accept the emoluments approved for her by Parliament.

She has thus decided to refund to the state all the monies paid her since 2017 which amounts to GHS899,097.84.

In a statement signed by Korkor Bleboo, Director of Communications at the Office of the First Lady said “The First Lady in consultation with the President of the Republic has decided to refund all the monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GHS899,097.84.”

“The First Lady has also decided not to accept any monies that have been allocated to be paid to her pursuant to the recommendations of the Ntiamoa-Baidu committee, as approved by Parliament. She is doing this as a purely personal decision, without prejudice to the rights of others, and not to undermine the propriety of the process undertaken by Parliament.”

In the statement, Mrs. Akufo-Addo’s Director of Communications argued that the First Lady did not request to be paid any allowance and that “She only received that which existed and attached to her status, albeit informally.”

According to the statement, the wife of the president took the decision because the discussions that greeted the announcement of the allowance payments have been laced with some extremely negative opinions, which she finds distasteful as such commentaries only seek “to portray her as a venal, self-seeking and self-centered woman, who does not care about the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.”

Drivers reject 13% hike in fares, vow to charge 20%

A group called the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has declined the 13 percent increment in transport fares announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

Drivers who belong to the association say they will implement the 20 percent increment on Saturday if the government fails to grant their request.

“We wish to state that, the 13% increment cannot in any way sustain our businesses considering the rate of increment in spare parts and fuel on recent times. Without mincing words, we shall implement the 20% increment starting from Saturday should government fail to grant us what we are seeking”, it said in a statement.

On Wednesday June 2, the GPRTU which is the officially known association for drivers in the country, announced the 13 percent upward change on Saturday, June 5, 2021.

The fares will cover intercity (tro-tro), intercity (long-distance) and shared taxis. The decision, according to the union, is to accommodate predominantly the recent increase in fuel prices.

It however said the government has assured that it will continue with efforts to prevent a steep rise in input costs.

Achimota School Board Does Not Have The Power To Appeal Ruling On Rastafarians Students- Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says the Board of Achimota School does not have the power to unilaterally decide to appeal a ruling of the Human Rights Court ordering it to admit two Rastafarian students.
According to him, any such important decision should have been advised by the Attorney General who represented both the school in the landmark case.

Education Minister commenting on the development on Good Evening Ghana show on Metro TV Tuesday night asked the Board of the Achimota School Board not to go ahead with the appeal.

“I am very surprised, the Board cannot take that unilateral position to go back to court”, Dr Adutwum said.

Achimota School Board Members to Appeal to Court’s Decision on Rastafarian Boys

Achimota School board of governors have served a notice to appeal to the recent High Court decision ordering it to admit the two Rastafarian boys, Tyrone Marhguy and Oheneba Nkrabea.

The school’s board of governors, in a statement released less than 24-hours after the landmark ruling by the Accra High Court yesterday, said it has instructed its lawyers to appeal the decision because it disagrees with it.
According to them, the court ruled that the religious rights of the two applicants had been violated by the School Management as they sought to enforce the time-tested and well-known rules of the School. The Court further directed the School to admit the two applicants. The school Board disagrees with the ruling of the Court” excerpts of the statement said.

Presiding Judge, Justice Gifty Adjei Addo disagreed with the submissions by the Attorney General and granted all the calmness singly sought by the embattled students except the relief of compensation in the case of Tyrone Marhguy.

Justice Addo further emphasized that, it is preposterous for the Attorney General to have even suggested that the two were not students in the first place. Justice Gifty Adjei Addo consequently directed Achimota School to admit the two Rastafarian students.

Man Buries Disabled Child Alive Under Prophetess Direction

A father of five, who is alleged to have buried his physically challenged child alive at Breman Brakwa in the Asikuma-Odoben Brakwa District in the Central Region, has been remanded by the Breman Asikuma Magistrate Court.

Paul Adobaw, aka Kojo Okor, is said to have buried the 18-month old child, Yaw Adobaw, under the direction of a supposed prophetess, Ama Nkansah, who is on the run.

Preliminary Investigations

DSP Oppong said preliminary police investigations revealed that Adobaw was married to one Yaa Atta at Brakwa, with whom he had five children. Eighteen-month-old Yaw Adobaw was their fourth child.

However, Yaw had not been able to walk since birth, on which basis the father consulted Prophetess Ama Nkansah at Gomoa Eshiem.

The police said Nkansah was said to have told Adobaw that the baby was a spirit child from a river, and that if he did not return the baby to the river gods, he would continue giving birth to such babies.

DSP Oppong said on the day of the incident, Adobaw and the prophetess sent the baby to the backyard of the house near the Gyankobeng stream, dug a grave, performed some rituals on the child and buried him alive.

Achimota Rasta Case: ‘Let Your Children Wear Any Hairstyle You Prefer’ NAGRATE To Parents

The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Cabornu, says parents are now free to make their children wear any kind of hairstyle to secondary schools in the country.

This comes after the High Court judgement which directed Achimota School to admit the Rastafarian students who were denied admission over their dreadlocks.

Reacting to the ruling, the NAGRAT President said “This ruling is not limited to Achimota school alone, it is extended to all schools so if you’re a parent whatever hair you want your child to wear you are at liberty to let your child wear. It could be Mohegan or any kind of hair even Achormo, you could make your daughter wear.

” And I will advise all our members to not waste their time in attempting to ask why the child is wearing that kind of hair. My understanding is that it is an open situation let us abide by it and enjoy the ramification”.
