I owe Ghanaians no apology; Gyan missed the penalty not me- Luis Suarez

Uruguay forward, Luis Suarez says he owes Ghanaians no apology following his role in the Black Stars’ 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal defeat.

Luis Suarez was asked today in a presser as Uruguay prepares to face Ghana in their last group match if he would apologize to Ghana on the 2010 incident; he said “I don’t need to apologize. I’d apologize if I injured a player, but in this situation, I handled the ball, I take a red card and the Ghana player missed the penalty. It’s not my fault. I didn’t miss the penalty. It’s not my responsibility.”

The forward insisted as he push the blame on Ghana’s forward Asamoah Gyan. “I take the handball – but the Ghana player missed a penalty, not me. Maybe I apologize if I injure a player but, in this situation, I take a red card, the referee says penalty, it’s not my fault.”

Twelve years ago, the Black Stars had a chance to score in the final seconds of extra time of the quarterfinal match at Soccer City Stadium, but Suarez blocked it with his hand.

Ghana was awarded a penalty but Ghana’s striker, Asamoah Gyan failed to score which resulted in  penalties and the Black stars lost to Uruguay.

This moment leaves rent free in the minds of many Ghanaians and demand an apology from Suarez. But the Uruguay forward says he owes Ghanaians no apology as he didn’t force Gyan to miss his kick.

12 years later, the two countries meet again on Friday, 2nd December, 2022 at the Qatar world cup. Who takes the bragging right? Is it going to be Uruguay beating Ghana again, or Ghana winning as a revenge.
